The San Luis Valley in southern Colorado is one of the most unique and resilient regions in the state. Rural Communities fuel our food systems, sustain small businesses and maintain traditions from generations of families who have worked the land. Yet, despite its deep roots and cultural richness, the Valley continues to face significant barriers to economic growth.

The challenges are real: limited access to capital, workforce challenges, and a lack of awareness around available financial resources. But within these challenges lie powerful opportunities. With the right tools and resources, like First Southwest Community Fund, rural regions can become hubs of innovations and growth, creating long-term prosperity.

As a Latino small business owner, I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges that come with starting and growing a business. When I became Director of our local Small Business Development Center, I had the privilege of working side by side with entrepreneurs—helping them shape business plans, navigate obstacles, and connect with the funding they needed to thrive. Throughout my work, I saw one organization consistently rise above the rest: First Southwest Community Fund. They didn’t just provide loans—they created real opportunities for rural women, farmers, BIPOC, and immigrant communities, helping people like me and the entrepreneurs I served turn their dreams into sustainable businesses. Joining the FSWCF board felt like a natural next step—to continue supporting the communities that have given me so much and to help open doors for others.

I was honored to be invited to apply for a board position at FSWCF—and I immediately accepted. Why? Because I saw it as a meaningful opportunity to better understand the needs of our communities, uncover the barriers that prevent people from accessing banking services, and contribute solution-driven ideas to make lending more equitable for those who have historically been excluded.

I’ve always been passionate about creating opportunities for financial freedom, especially for members of underserved communities. I love hearing the real stories of budding entrepreneurs—their struggles, their ambitions, and the ways they plan to overcome challenges. Being able to play a part in turning those dreams into reality is incredibly fulfilling. While I serve on many boards that do important work in our communities, I truly believe that no organization makes as meaningful an impact on small business owners as FSWCF. Their dedication to problem-solving, stewarding resources, and fostering sustainable success for our communities is unmatched.

The San Luis Valley is full of hardworking, visionary people ready to grow and innovate. First Southwest Community Fund empowers these entrepreneurs by providing resources, support, and opportunities for lasting success. I’m proud to be part of their mission to help our communities thrive.
